About this edition
Earlier this year I exhibited Flaw, an installation of drawings recording the dust and dirt from the kitchen floor and other domestic grime. Each drawing was an investment of time and care in looking at the overlooked – I was deliberately abandoning housework to make artwork. One of the drawings, Phantom, rendered our uncleaned cooker hob in pencil and was shown on a fabricated boulder. For this edition, the photo-realist drawing of the hob is printed onto a scarf. Here it becomes an invitation to thwart Virginia Woolf’s ‘angel in the house’, adorn your neck in silk and step out into the world.
“I discovered that….I should need to do battle with a certain phantom. And the phantom was a woman, and when I came to know her better I called her after the heroine of a famous poem, The Angel in the House…. I will describe her as shortly as I can. She was intensely sympathetic…She was utterly unselfish. She excelled in the difficult arts of family life. She sacrificed herself daily…in short she was so constituted that she never had a mind or wish of her own – “
